Book review by reviewsofbooks.com

Wanted:

One young woman to take care of four-year-old boy.
Must be cheerful, enthusiastic and selfless-bordering on masochistic
Must relish sixteen-hour shifts with a deliberately nap-deprived pre-schooler
Must love getting thrown up on, literally and figuratively, by everyone in his family
Must enjoy the delicious anticipation of ridiculously erratic pay
Mostly, must love being treated like fungus found growing out of employers Hermes bag.
Those who take it personally need not apply.

Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus have both worked as nannies and in The Nanny Diaries they have written a caustic satire about nannies and the rich families they serve in New York's Upper East Side. The main character, called Nanny, works for the X family. She sees to all the needs of their pre-school son, Grayer, and runs him to his constant stream of French lessons, ice-skating lessons, play dates, and other activities. Mrs. X treats her son as a fashion accessory and Nanny as less-than-human, someone there to keep her son out of her hair and see to all her personal errands she'd rather not have to do at any hour of the day. Mr. X is distant and cold-hearted, and even his mistress asks Nanny for favors and errands. All this for 10 dollars an hour. It's a biting comedy that skewers the gilded hands that don't know how to treat their children or hired help.

Review by me, a reader
Ceritanya bagus, lucu, kasihan dengan pengalaman nyata dari penulis yang menjadi nanny untuk keluarga yang sangat kaya; the Xes family. Dalam buku ini diceritakan sepertinya Nanny inilah yang membesarkan Grayer, the kid, instead of his OWN mother.
